The Indian Institute of Technology [IIT], Delhi and DAKSH Society, Bengaluru have signed an agreement on 15th October 2020 to set up the ‘DAKSH Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Law and Technology’ at the campus of IIT-Delhi. The Center of Excellence will carry out interdisciplinary research on different aspects of the justice system. Professor V. Ramgopal Rao, Director at IIT Delhi, and Surya Prakash BS, Programme Director at DAKSH Society in Bengaluru have signed the agreement.
As part of the MoU, the two prevalent institutions will work in the fields of research and education in technology, operations research, technology, and law, data analytics, Engineering and Management, the institute said in an official statement. To enhance its effectiveness, IIT-Delhi will build solutions from various fields. Besides the infrastructural facilities, IIT-Delhi will offer a wide range of research facilities and scientific and technical expertise to the center.
The institute said it will also appeal to candidates and research scholars to establish startups and incubators on various law and technology-specific research solutions. DAKSH will also help in securing financial resources for the activities of the Center of Excellence. IIT-Delhi said in a statement, ‘IIT-Delhi will take adequate measures to engage more faculty members from relevant areas in the CoE. The institute will also attract students and research scholars to set up startups and incubators on different law and technology-related research solutions.’
In a statement, Professor Rao said, ‘This is the beginning of a long-standing relationship between IIT Delhi and DAKSH. The Centre will address some of the critical issues faced by the society and work to provide the solutions. I am also happy to see that major departments at IIT Delhi such as Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science are coming together for this CoE.’
As per the MoU agreement, DAKSH will interact with the judiciary, institutes of the state, universities, private organizations, and researchers for mutual research projects and associate with the groups at IIT Delhi for inter-disciplinary research and development for the justice system. It will also help in protecting financial resources for the center. Surya Prakash BS, the Programme Director at DAKSH Society said, ‘This is an exciting partnership that will provide independent, non-partisan interdisciplinary research to address the most pressing issues in the justice system. We hope that the CoE will become a hub for innovative research and implementation models for the justice system. A formal launch event is being planned and will be held soon.’
