Maharashtra to Reopen Schools for Classes 5 to 8 from Jan 27

The Education Minister of Maharashtra said that all the schools will reopen across the state for the students of classes 5 to 8 from 27th January. After more than 10 months of shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the educational institutions will open soon in the state. The state education minister, Varsha Gaikwad made this announcement on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation [BMC] said that all the educational institutions in Mumbai will remain closed till further orders. Different schools and junior colleges for 9th to 12th classes had already opened in specific regions of the state at the beginning of this month. Considering the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in those specific areas, the concerned authorities have reopened the educational institutions.

The minister further stated, ‘I have informed Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray that schools can be reopened for Classes 5 to 8 from January 27.’ The minister said that before planning to reopen schools and colleges, the local authorities such as municipal commissioners, district collectors, and district civil surgeons must check the situation in that particular area.

Varsha Gaikwad said, ‘Earlier, schools for Classes 9 and 10 commenced after all teachers underwent RT-PCR tests and premises were sanitized. Similar measures will be taken before reopening schools for Classes 5 to 8.’ The civic body in Mumbai released a new circular mentioning that all the schools and colleges of different mediums will continue to be closed till it receives orders from the government.

The civic body further said that considering the second wave of the virus in the remaining countries in some other states, it will decide whether to reopen the schools and colleges in Mumbai. Previously, the BMC had planned to remain all the educational institutions closed till 15th January 2021. In recent times, BMC allowed all the state, national, and international boards to organize their scheduled exams physically according to the timetable.
