National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning [NPTEL] has commenced enrollment for about 500 online certification courses for the January-April 2021 semester. NPTEL is a SWAYAM national coordinator and an Indian online learning platform for university-level subjects. NPTEL provides free courses for the students as well as the working professionals.
The key courses offered by NPTEL include data structures and algorithms using Python, programming, health research fundamentals and constitutional studies, engineering thermodynamics, basic electrical circuits, and more. The interested and eligible students can join these courses via the website https://swayam.gov.in/.
NPTEL is collectively developed by the Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institutes of Technology. The Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Government of India has initiated this online learning platform. Various certification courses are offered to the students via the Massive Open Online Courses [MOOCs] format. The students who take part in this programme need to watch online videos, complete assignments, and submit them weekly and register for an in-person final examination invigilated at the end.
Prathap Haridoss, the coordinator at SWAYAM-NPTEL-IIT Madras stated, ‘Companies can partner with NPTEL and use NPTEL courses to train their freshers, cross-skill and up-skill their existing workforce.’ As of now, it has 49 industry partners across the nation.
Another coordinator of this programme, Andrew Thangaraj said, ‘To streamline the efforts of learners and to guide them to obtain expertise in an area, NPTEL has initiated the idea of ‘Domain Certification.’ A domain comprises a set of core and elective NPTEL courses. Those who complete a domain [specified core courses + elective courses] with an average score of 60 will get a domain certificate from NPTEL.’
At present SWAYAM-NPTEL jointly works with about 4000 colleges in various disciplines such as Engineering, Commerce, Arts, Science, and Management across the nation. Several students prefer taking these certification exams as it assists them in enhancing their job opportunities. An 86-year old retired headmistress, Sarada Raman is one of the oldest learners at SWAYAM to take up the NPTEL certification. From NPTEL, she acquired certification in the German language.
Through copious interactive sessions, live video sessions, and more, students can face any of their employment interviews without any fear. NPTEL has been gradually acquiring international prominence. As the enrollment is now open, the willing candidates can register for any of their preferred certification courses.
