ShareChat, one of the popular social media platforms is looking forward to getting tie-ups with IITs and other premier engineering institutions. Intending to develop AI in the local Indian languages, ShareChat has been mulling to tie-up with various IITs. It’s been less than a month since the acquisition of hyperlocal information platform Circle Internet by ShareChat. The company has been striving hard to make tie-ups with IITs and popular engineering institutions to build Artificial Intelligence [AI] in local Indian languages.
Debdoot Mukherjee, the VP of ShareChat said, ‘It is entirely unstructured and, hence, the framework for developing an AI model has no ready reference point. This is unlike Mandarin, which has a reference framework.’ ShareChat has previously developed Natural Language Processing [NLP] models in two languages such as English and Hindi. Now, the company is seeking to roll out the Indianised version of the model, said Mukherjee.
In recent times, IIT-Madras developed AI models and data sets to process texts in a total of 11 Indian regional languages. IIT Madras has developed these models collaboratively with AI4Bharat. Similarly, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology-Delhi (IIIT-D) partnered with social enterprise Logically and rolled out a 2-year research partnership. This 2-year research collaboration will help explore the origin, motivations, and psychology of false information shared online.
Observing at the latest developments, ShareChat is trying to work on building an algorithm. ShareChat has apparently surpassed more than 160 million monthly active users [MAUs] with a certain number of users spending 31 minutes on the platform daily. In August 2020, the homegrown social media platform acquired Circle Internet. The company has designed and built its own short-video app namely ‘Moj’. It has been striving to take benefit from banning TikTok in India.
