The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, or IIT Bombay recently disclosed the schedule for the GATE 2021 examination. As per the schedule, the Graduate Aptitude Test in [GATE] will be conducted between 5th and 7th February and 12th to 13th February 2021. The concerned authorities have extended the exam date considering the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The upcoming GATE 2021 edition comprises few changes in the eligibility criteria and the syllabus.
The officials might introduce two new subjects in the exam syllabus and also relaxation in the eligibility criteria of the applicants. The conducting team of GATE 2021 led by the professors of IIT Bombay Upendra Bhandarkar, Deepankar Choudhury, and Mohd. Aslam made these changes to the GATE 2021 edition. As per the new syllabus, the two new subjects to be introduced in GATE 2021 edition include Humanities and Social Science and Environmental Science and Engineering, or ES. By including these two, the total number of subjects reached 27.
The Director of IIT Bombay, Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri appreciated the new initiative of the GATE 2021 committee. He said, ‘I am particularly delighted at the creation of much needed new career opportunities for those in the Humanities and Social Sciences area as this may serve as one single standardized criterion for admission to various masters and doctoral programs in various IITs and other universities in India.’
He further said, ‘Should any agency, for example, various PSUs [Public Sector Undertakings] want to hire candidates with Humanities background, this new exam paper in GATE will prove to be a great enabler!’ Meanwhile, the committee made changes in the eligibility criteria for the GATE applicants. The candidates in the 3rd year will be eligible for the national-level test.
In an official statement issued by IIT Bombay, ‘Eligibility criteria to appear for GATE-2021 is relaxed from the minimum 10+2+4 (ongoing) to minimum 10+2+3 (ongoing), enabling even those in the third year of their undergraduate studies to appear for the examination, thus providing an additional opportunity to candidates to improve their performance to secure better career options.’
GATE 2021 will be a computer-based examination that comprises multiple-choice questions. The students need to answer 65 questions and the exam paper is conducted for 100 marks. The students will be given 3 hours for writing the computer-based test. The entrance exam comprises a total of 2 sections. The questions in the GATE 2021 exam will be on various topics such as Engineering Mathematics, General Aptitude, and Core Engineering field of the candidate.
